About Fiestas Patrias
Fiestas Patrias mark the anniversary of Mexico’s call for independence from Spain on September 16, 1810. The holiday honors Father Miguel Hidalgo, who urged Mexicans to rise against Spanish rule with the famous "Grito de Dolores." Unlike the actual day of independence, this celebration focuses on the call to action. In the United States, especially in the Southwest, California, and Texas, Fiestas Patrias is a cultural event that strengthens ties to Mexican heritage. The festivities include traditional music, dance, food, and clothing.
The Fiestas Patrias Mexicanas of Bryan/College Station, a nonprofit organization founded in the early 1990s, organizes this annual event that attracts approximately 10,000 people to Historic Downtown Bryan. The organization supports education by awarding scholarships to students and educators pursuing higher education. As members of the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley, they work to unite the community through the celebration of Mexican culture and the arts.
