Lone Star Showdown: The History of the Texas A&M vs UT Rivalry
The heated rivalry between Texas A&M and the University of Texas dates all the way back to the mid-1890s, when the two Texas teams faced off for the first time. It ended in a devastating loss for A&M, with a final score of 38 - 0.
Over the next 7 years, A&M would lose every game without a single point on the scoreboard. It would take until the 9th game for A&M to actually score against UT, but by then, the rivalry was already so hot that the College Station university would swear off playing against the Austin school. Their claim? The Longhorns were playing dirty, and A&M would simply not play against them.
It wouldn’t be until 1915 that the teams would face off again, this time on Thanksgiving Day, beginning a holiday tradition. Over the years, the Lone Star Showdown has become more than just football.
The showdown encompasses all of men’s and women’s sports from both Texas A&M and the University of Texas. The universities rack up points for every race or game they win, with the Lone Star Trophy ultimately being awarded to the team with the most points.
Though in 2025 the Longhorns won out over the Aggies in the football game, A&M won the Lone Star Trophy for the 2025-26 season with a final point score of 11.5 - 7.5.
