Born of converging cultures and built on deep Texas roots, Bryan is a community filled with authentic stories, people, and places – our legends. Our legends are ever evolving while staying true to our Texas spirit.
Bryan's roots begin with a pioneer colony called Boonville, established in what was Mexican Texas in 1821. Starting with only 1,000 families, Boonville was selected as the county seat for Brazos County and became a prospering agricultural town.
When the Houston and Texas Central railway expanded through what we know today as Historic Downtown Bryan, Boonville citizens began moving closer to the railroad. They voted to move the county seat to Bryan in 1866.
As the years went on, the establishment continued to develop, becoming a melting pot of Hispanic, Italian, African American, and Czech peoples and their cultures as they migrated to the Texas colony. And, by 1871, Bryan was officially on the map after earning its municipality. (To learn more about Bryan's early years, click here.)
Since then, the population has grown to 83,980 people (as of 2020), with the city's roots in community, the arts, and its rich history only flourishing. Historic Downtown Bryan is one of the many areas in town that captures the culmination of these values with over 60 local shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, and landmarks that prove why Bryan has become such a hotspot for tourism in recent years.
