Classes at the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) began on October 4, 1876 – on land that had been given by the citizens of Bryan, Texas.
A Legendary Beginning
One of Bryan's most prominent historical figures, Harvey Mitchell (1821-1901), led the charge in Bryan's bid to become home to the state's first public institution of higher education. In 1871, as cities across Texas vied for this honor, Mitchell led a 3-man committee to secure the land the Texas Legislature needed to build the new college. Legend has it that somewhere along the way, Mitchell held a winning hand of poker securing the opportunity for Brazos County.
Today, Harvey Mitchell is known as the Father of Texas A&M. He is buried alongside his family & several citizens of the Republic of Texas at Boonville Heritage Park in Bryan.
