Authentic German Food in Aggieland
The Story Behind Bavarian Brauhaus
Learn the history behind Bavarian Brauhaus, an authentic German restaurant in the heart of Downtown Bryan, and discover how a family from Munich brought a taste of Bavaria to Aggieland.
When Ludwig Kasper Sr. and his wife, Waltraut, bought a historic building on Main Street in 2006, Downtown Bryan had just begun coming back to life. It had only been six years since The LaSalle’s original reopening, and The Queen Theatre and The Palace Theater were still in disrepair. Still, the Kaspers wanted to bring their hospitality from Bavaria to Bryan.
The couple was from Munich and were drawn to the deep-rooted German heritage in Central Texas. They saw an opportunity for a new place that would bring together authentic German culture with community, and their son, Ludwig Jr., had two successful Irish pubs in Southern Germany (both named Murphy’s Law.)
The family combined concepts and spent two years renovating the building, blending two distinct worlds under one roof. In 2008, Bavarian Brauhaus and Murphy’s Law Pub opened side by side. It’s been a gathering place in Downtown Bryan ever since.
Whether people are here for a pint or a loud song, we plan on being a consistent home for this community for a really long time.
Bavarian Brauhaus serves authentic German food like jaegarschnitzel and fleischkäse, and leans into tradition by hosting a weekly Stammisch (a “regular’s table”) for local veterans. They’ve been meeting here for years, swapping stories over German beer and food. Some regulars have passed away, and are now remembered by plaques in the places where they always sat.
Next door, Murphy’s Law brings together community and nightlife. This lively side of the building also serves German food and has a large selection of board games. Similar to the Bavarian Brauhaus’ authentic decor, all of the furniture and the handcrafted wooden bar in Murphy’s is from Ireland.
As General Manager of both establishments, Dennis Lara has had a front row seat watching the community grow alongside Downtown Bryan. He grew up in Munich and worked with Ludwig Jr. at Murphy’s Law in Ausburg, Germany. When Ludwig asked him to help out at the Murphy’s in Bryan for a few months, he said yes—and ended up staying for the next decade.
The Downtown scene has exploded with so many new bars, restaurants, apartments and other venues. It's been cool to witness the overall development of the city.
This unique German-Irish combo has been with Downtown Bryan through many phases, from disrepair to revitalization. As Downtown continues to grow, it’ll remain a place where you can always find German food, Guinness, and community.
